Happy Chinese New Year!!!!

Do you know that Chinese people celebrate New Year for 15 days?  The 15th day marks the first full moon after the Spring Festival and of the New Year. The 15th day is also known as the Lantern Festival day.  Another reunion dinner is held with lanterns being a large part of the celebrations.  It is customary to eat special sticky rice balls with many difference fillings resembling the shape of the full moon.  The round shape also means completeness and good luck.  During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns.   For 2019, the Lantern Festival is 2/19.  To end the celebration of the Chinese New Year,  I want to share with you another project that I made – Firecracker Treat Box.

I made the box by using the Window Box Thinlits in Red color.  The Thinlits came in several options to cut out the delicate designs providing a peek of what’s inside.  You can also use these cut out pieces to decorate the box.

Before you assemble the box, let’s make the firecrackers first.  If you are like me, you always have a lot of scarp paper left from other projects.  I cut the DSP into 1 1/4 (length of the firecrackers) x 2 (the length can be varies).  I also cut the Linen Thread into 4″ long.

I use Scotch Tape to tape the Linen Thread to the paper as pictured below.  I put the glue on the 1 1/4 long side.

I used the chopstick to roll the paper up and used a cloth pin to hold the firecracker so the glue can dry.  I made 20 individual firecrackers for this project.

First, I tied three firecrackers together.  I braided the firecrackers and added additional firecrackers every two or three braids.  when I braided all of the firecrackers together, I used Linen Thread to tie all of the firecrackers threads at the end.

I trimmed the threads and used Scotch tape to tape them together.

Now it’s time to make the treat box part.

I cut two box parts by using the Window Box Thinlets die in the Real Red Cardstock.  Each box needs two pieces of box parts to create a box.  Fold all of the lines at the die scored.  I cut the two small flaps in one of the box part pieces we cut out.

When you assemble the box, the small flaps are the places to put the glue.  Assemble one side of the box (one box part piece).

Glue the small flap of the second box part piece hexagon side to the first piece.  I used the scissor tip to poke a hole in the side next to hexagon.  I pushed firecrackers that I made earlier to the box and used Scotch tape to secure the firecrackers to the box.

Then glue the hexagon side.  Before we finish the whole box, I cut 10 inches long Linen Thread and tied it to the toothpick.  Push the thread from inside to outside as picture showed.  This will be the hanging part for the firecracker.

Glue the side panels and leave one side panel open.  Because I wanted to put the candies in the box, I want to create an area that can be opened and closed.  I poked a hole in both sides of the open side panels.

I put brads on the holes .  I put a thread into one hole and use Scotch tape to type it from inside of the box.

The other side, when I put the brad in it.  I used scissor to leave some space for the brad.

Now we can use the thread to secure the box when the flap is closed.

At the end, I used the side to decorate the die in the Window Box Thinlets set to cut out two Gold lace details.  I glued these two beautiful piece to the box.

Now you can put a lot of candies in this cute firecracker treat box.
